The Hogsback region in Spring – Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth

Day 1: Distance for day: 580 km

Today we follow the main N1 route, travelling through the Free State, with stops on route made at Kroonstad and Bloemfontein to view the sights of these historical towns. We will check into the De Stijl Hotel by the Gariep dam for the night. The distance for the day is longer than normal, but it is mostly on a very safe, duel carriageway.

We continue the drive today through remote parts of the Eastern Cape. We first travel towards Molteno, to arrive in Queenstown for lunch. After lunch, it is another very scenic drive over the Nico Malan pass before we arrive in the Katberg region. The last part of the drive takes us through the towns of Fort Beaufort and Alice, and then it is uphill towards the charming village of the Hogsback. On arrival, we check into the Arminel Hotel for a 3 night stay. The hotel has wonderful gardens and footpaths to explore.

Day 3 + 4: Distances for day: 50 km

The next two days are set out to explore this wonderful mountain area, and the charming attractions, galleries and gardens in the area. Various drives and walks will be undertaken to the various points of interest, with enough relaxation time in between. Some of the attractions to be visited will be – the morning market, the Eco Shrine, the Labyrinth, the Edge, the Big tree, the micro tower for views of the 3 “Hogs” and waterfalls, the Arboretum, and various gardens that are open to the public during spring time. It is truly a delight for garden lovers.

Day 5: Distance for day: 200 km

Today we travel down the mountain on a scenic route to the town of Bedford. Here we will be visiting the museum and experience the hospitality of the locals. A lovely lunch will be enjoyed at a favourite coffee shop in town. After lunch, we drive alongside the Fish River towards the charming historical town of Cradock. On arrival in Cradock, we check into the “Tuishuise” for the next two nights’ stay. It is a collection of wonderfully restored old houses depicting the Dutch and English Settlers period. In the late afternoon, we undertake a walking tour of the historical parts of town.

Day 6: Distance for day: 150 km

The town of Cradock and its surroundings have many interesting attractions. This includes a visit to the beautiful 2 churches in town, various art galleries, arts and craft shops, the Fish River Museum, the Olive Schreiner Museum, the lookout point overlooking the town, and more. And then we also visit the Mountain Zebra National Park to explore the unique landscapes and animals of this park. The scenery in the park varies from grass covered plateaus to wooded ravines, and is a sanctuary for the rare Cape Mountain Zebra, and herds of Eland, Springbok, Kudu, Black wildebeest, Blesbok, Red Hartebeest, Cheetah, Meerkat and over 200 species of birds.

Day 7: Distance for day: 250 km

On this last day we travel down towards Port Elizabeth. It is again a very scenic and mountainous route, via Somerset East and Patterson. We will arrive in Port Elizabeth around lunchtime and in time for the afternoon flight home around 14h00. On arrival in Johannesburg, guests will again be met by a colleague and transferred home.

Bedford Gardens

Processed with MoldivThis trip is designed for persons to visit the very popular Bedford Garden Festival, which is only held for one weekend per year. The festival’s aim is for visitors to experience world renowned country gardens, as well as pretty town and township gardens, to enjoy scrumptious food and wines, and visit the craft stalls. The trip will start in Port Elizabeth, and end in Johannesburg. The cost of the transfer to the airport and the flight to PE is included in the price.

The festival is during spring time, so the scenery all along the route will be very colourful. Please note that the final date for the festival in 2017 are not final, but it is always held during the last weekend of October. If the dates for 2017 are different, guests that have booked will be informed. We will still do the trip, as we will make arrangements to visit the gardens beforehand.

Day 1: Distance for day: 150 km

Guest will be picked up from their homes, and transferred to OR Tambo airport. Time for the pickup, transfer and flight will be confirmed closer to the date. Depart on domestic departing around 11h00, from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth. On arrival your host will be waiting for you. We depart from the airport on a 2 hour drive to the Addo Elephant Park. A convenience and lunch stop will be made on route. We will check into the well-appointed chalets at Addo National Park for the first 3 nights of the tour. Around 16h00 we will do a first afternoon game drive in this wonderful park. Dinners and breakfasts at Addo will be prepared by your host.

Day 2/3 : Distance for day: 50 km

Today we will do game drives into the park to view the variety of animals, and especially the elephants. We will set aside some time as well for a bit of relaxation, where guest can view the water hole form their chalets. Enjoy the beauty of this park.

Day 4: Distances for day: 250 km

After a last drive through the park it will be time to move on again. We travel from Addo towards the town Bedford. We will visit the town Country Fair, SA Rosarium and some garden. Dinner and overnight at Alome Guesthouse in Somerset East.Bedford flowers (1024 x 678)

Day 5: Distances for the days: 200 km

We will travel towards Bedford- 50 km away. The Bedford Garden festival has more than 40 gardens that are open to the public. So we will follow various routes to get too many of the prize winning gardens. We also visit the town Country Fair, where you can meander through craft stalls and sock up on local pantry fillers. We will learn more about heritage roses at the SA Rosarium. We will do the best of the festival.

Day 6: Distance for day: 450 km

The journey home starts today, and we follow the N10 route via Middelburg, Noupoort, Colesberg and Springfontein. Being typical Karoo areas the landscape continuously changes from high mountain ranges and passes to open plains areas. After enjoying lunch in Colesberg we also visit the Gariep Dam before the last part of the drive towards Bloemfontein. Arrive in the mid afternoon for the last evening at the Ebith Island Guesthouse. Day 7: Distance for day: 400 km

Our last day will be all along the N1 route to Johannesburg, which is a good double carriageway. We travel via Ventersburg and Kroonstad towards Johannesburg. Guests will be dropped off at their home in the mid afternoon.
